Anyone want to clue me in -- do I actually need to have a website to implant this measly .jpg in my LJ?

Depends. If you want to make the picture icon size, you can upload it to your icons and then command the entry to display it.

If you want a full sized .jpg, then yeah, you are going to have to put it in a website and call it from that site. The command is:

< img src="http://your.website.com" >

Minus the spaces between the "<" and the command, of course.
