For anyone who hasn’t already noticed, AO3 is currently down for maintenance for approximately 2 to 4 weeks (as of 17:45 UTC 29 October, 2026). You can keep up to date on their status page and tumblr.

Read on for an update on our Halloween and Secret Santa events, some handy resources, and an invitation to use this dreamwidth post as a fandom space…

Halloween Prompt Challenge

You can post fills for this event anywhere. Comment to the dreamwidth post including a link to your fill for it to count; you do not need a dreamwidth account to comment, just make sure you include your online handle so we know who you are.

If you do not have anywhere else to post you can:
> Post your fill directly into a comment on the dreamwidth post. If your fill is long, you can post over multiple comments in a thread. Again, no account is required.
> Send a Word doc or other text file (anything I can copy the text from) to be_compromised@hotmail.com I will then post your fill directly to the be_compromised dreamwidth site for you. (Example from when we did this for Secret Santa 2023.) Please still then comment to the dreamwidth post and, instead of a link, state that you’ve submitted to the comm email.

Reminder that the deadline for this event is Midnight Saturday 31 October. I may not get to your email straight away, but as long as you’ve commented on the dreamwidth post and I receive your fill at be_compromised@hotmail.com before I create the masterlist (which will be on dreamwidth and tumblr) on Sunday evening, your fic will be included. If you have already posted a fill on AO3, you’re welcome to also post elsewhere or as above.

After AO3 returns, keep your eyes peeled for an update. There will be an opportunity to post your fills to AO3 and for the masterlist to be updated.

Secret Santa 2026

Reminder that the deadline for this event is 16:00 GMT Monday 07 December. This is after the expected AO3 maintenance period. If AO3 does not return before this deadline, please check the community dreamwidth for an update.

You should have received your assignment information in an email. If for some reason you can’t access this, all of the prompts, yes please, and no thank yous are available in the Secret Santa Choices Post. If you can’t remember which one of these has been assigned to you, I can let you know.

Handy Resources

For sharing your writing:

> You can post directly to the community dreamwidth. Getting started on Dreamwidth, which has a rich text editor but also here’s a handy guide to using html on dreamwidth.
> You can post to tumblr and include [community profile] be_compromised in the post for a reblog. We also do our best to track #be_compromised and #clintasha

Jokes aside about spending this time writing/creating and touching grass, if you’re looking for things to read:

> You can find masterlists of all be_compromised events on Dreamwidth here. Links in those lists will very often go to AO3, however if you scroll back to earlier events - we have lists going back to 2012! - you’ll find fics posted directly to livejournal or dreamwidth, ff.net, and other places. If you’re feeling seasonal, all Secret Santa fics from 2012 to 2022 are available on Dreamwidth; check out the masterlist tag or the tags for those Secret Santa events on the right-hand side.

> Our community tumblr, where we’ve been sharing whumptober and seasonal fics that have been posted directly on tumblr. Shout out to quietlyimplode and firlalaith/avengersoul.

> It’s a pain to search, but fanfiction.net.

> Books! Libraries are your friend; a few places to start are Project Gutenberg for lots of free books; Libby; QLL (USA only)

And a shout out that you can still donate to OT3 and AO3 - the Archive is run by volunteers and any additional tech support comes from donations.

Fandom Space

One of the great things about AO3 is how organised and searchable it is. You’re very welcome to join us on tumblr and our community discord, but we appreciate tumblr isn’t easy to search and on discord things can get lost when there’s a lot of posts. For something a little more accessible and open to everyone, we invite you to use the comments section of this post as a fandom space.

Please feel free to use the comments to share rec lists, resources, invitations to share fanfic PDFs, chat, and anything else. While we’re primarily a community for fans of Clint and Natasha, we have members with lots of different interests! So also please feel free to start comment threads for other fandoms or areas of interest. We do just ask that you otherwise follow our community rules; essentially, please be kind <3

My (spoilery) essay "This Rip Roaring Art: Feminine Rage as Creative Passion in Your Monster" is up at Interstellar Flight Magazine. Caroline Lindy's horror rom-com is one of my favorite films of recent years. I could probably write a book about it (and I hope someone will!), but this essay explores one aspect I find particularly fascinating.

In other film news, the weekend before World Fantasy I saw the restored version of Ken Russell's The Devils at the Vista Theatre. I was thrilled to finally see it on a big screen. (A few people actually walked out before the end.) Partway through the film, I had to ask myself how many times I'd watched it (on videotape) in the eighties, because I knew so much of the dialogue verbatim. (Back then, I even read Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudon--the film's source material--and wrote a poem about Sister Jeanne.) I was surprised that, for the most part, I found the expurgated version more effective than the restored one--but then, my favorite Russell films (especially Mahler and Savage Messiah) are those where he manages to rein himself in. (I don't like the idea of him being forced to make edits, though.) The expurgated version of The Devils is certainly buck wild, and the uncensored material is mostly more of the same. In any case, I am delighted that moviegoers are flocking to theaters to see the film. It feels far more relevant than when I first saw it--not only because of its uneasy mixture of religion and politics, but also because of the plague. It's a spectacular film on every level: acting, cinematography, screenplay, art direction, and soundtrack. I hope I'll get to see more of Russell's greatest films on a big screen.

I am home from World Fantasy in Oakland. I've only ever attended WFC in California (previously in San Diego, San Jose, and near LAX in Los Angeles). I wasn't on programming this year, but the panels and readings I attended were top-notch. There was quite a bit of speculative poetry programming, likely due to Linda D. Addison being WFC's first-ever poet guest of honor.

I spent quite a bit of time in the dealer room, where I purchased Cynthia Gomez's The Nightmare Box and Other Stories, M.M. Olivas' Sundown in San Ojuela, and Jewelle Gomez's Caramelle / Le Fanu's Carmilla (and got all three signed). I discovered a used bookstore across the street from the hotel, where I snagged a copy of Tanith Lee's The Book of the Beast. I also made a side trip to Berkeley to visit one of my all-time favorite bookstores, Moe's, where I'd spent untold hours back in the 1980s-early 90s. There I picked up H.D.'s By Avon River.

Back home, I was sorting through piled-up election mailings today and was delighted to discover my copy of Best of Penumbric had arrived, including my poem "portrait of the artist as a young gorgon."

The Snowflake Challenge will be back in 2027! We hope you are able to join us for a month of community and prompting to ring in the New Year and get us through an otherwise dark and chilly season (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least).

We have a group of wonderful mods who are returning this year, but we love having new mods join in and there is a LOT to do. Becoming a mod can be as low or high commitment as you like. Here's some info about the various roles we have as mods:

Poster: You would write and post one of the prompt posts. The mod community works together to decide on the topic, but you get to explain it in your post and frame it in a way that fits the challenge. Then, on an assigned day, you make the post. Typically, posters also act as commenters on their own posts (see the next role).

Commenter: As participants leave comments on the prompt post linking to their personal journals for the response, you leave a comment acknowledging their participation. You can also visit their challenge response and comment on what they wrote, if time allows.

Other site organizer: Ideally we would be able to extend this challenge into other fandom spaces. This role will require adapting each post to whatever site you are managing (tumblr, bluesky, mastodon, etc), which may include fixing links, removing or altering HTML, sharing a small quote and linking to the Dreamwidth post, tagging appropriately, and/or removing or altering images to your site's specifications. You should be prepared to crosspost all intro/wrap-up posts as well as prompts, and you should be prepared to make additional posts as needed on your site to promote the challenge and interact with participants. Usually one or two people manage this role for a single space (such as managing all the posting to bluesky).

If you're interested in becoming a mod, comment here and you can be added to the mod comm. Thank you all and stay tuned!
