I've thought pretty much all day on this, and the one that keeps sticking uppermost in my thoughts is that you're the Mal to my Book. I know I kind of assume the role of mother hen, teacher, mentor, whatever with a lot of our group, but I've always been very aware in my dealings with you that while you may well be learning things from me, it is not up to me to teach you.

Does that make sense? Mal relies on Book being around, relies on his steadiness and his presence, but every time Book opens his mouth to directly impart some bit of knowledge or experience, Mal's brain is literally not wired to hear what he's trying to say.
