Again.
But a respectable word count nonetheless.
"Convicted in Absentia":
Should reach the NaNo mark this morning. Starbucks was very busy and very noisy last night, but there's something about music piped through headphones that can typically help me focus in and block everything else out.
*yawn*
Of course for a change, it wasn't the writing that kept me up late last night. I know I've been kind of quiet on the BSG commentary front, but it hasn't been for lack of watching.
Last night's episode seems to have resonated differently with a lot of the usual suspects. Me? I'm stupidly giggly over the fact that Sci-Fi slapped a "Mature Subject Matter" warning on the show! When a show that's dealt with everything this one has picks *this* episode to slap a warning on...that's amusing.
First and foremost, since I haven't had a chance to say it -- I am completely irrationally pleased that RDM has found a way to work Athena back into the series. I don't even know why either -- but it was an organic evolution, and it works.
Grace Park kicked all kinds of ass last night. She operates on a far different level acting-wise than Katee Sackhoff, and I think as a result she often gets lost in the glare of Starbuck's brilliance.
I still love her character though, even though she does tend to get hauled out for the "see, now we're going to teach you a LESSON" episodesa bit more than is probably necessary. Makes her seem weak and reactionary, and while yes the character is that to a degree -- I think Park infuses her with a lot more levels.
Case in point -- the fact that the biggest flaw with this episode in my opinion is that for a LESSON episode, they didn't spend nearly enough time with the moral debate. We could have shown a tenth of Baltar's Magical Mystery Tour (especially after devoting nearly the entirety of Part One to it) and spent a lot more time with the Colonials.
*Why* were each of them reacting the way they did? I got Helo's motivations just fine, but what about Apollo's? Why the hell was he so gung-ho about the prospect of genocide? His argument would have made a lot more sense coming from Starbuck, Tigh, or hell -- even Roslin. Laura was in full on airlock mode when she told Helo she was going to pretend she didn't hear the crap he was spewing (and honestly, it was crap. Even Helo wouldn't try to spin the Occupation that way).
There's been a lot of talk of deleted scenes, based on the promo photos that were released for the episodes -- and I think this is definitely a case where they made the wrong choice in editing. I'd like to see the scenes -- something tells me the confrontation between Starbuck and Leoben would have resonated a lot better.
I hope this isn't as much of a standalone episode as it looks on first glance. There need to be consequences -- both for the choices Adama and Roslin made and the choices Helo made. RDM *should* know better than to cheat us out of them.
And through it all, I got every drop of Athena's divided nature -- the pull of nature vs. nurture, family of birth vs. family of choice. Classic, meaty stuff, and she hit it perfectly. In fact, when she was repeating to Helo about how "this Cylon will keep her word", I got a clear sense that she almost wished that since Hera had given her partial immunity Galactica *would* go ahead and annihilate the rest of the Cylons.
Then with the threat gone, she might have a chance at some peace in her world. Athena may have been a Goddess of War, but it was only in just cause. She was equally at home in time of Peace.
Based on the promos for next week, I'm probably going to hate the episode. *sigh*
