Re: I didn't realise this fic was yours until after I'd read it XD
13/8/12 19:30 (UTC)The story I chose was a fairly tricky balancing act all the way through, and this is one of those critical scenes. I had to simultaneously ride the line of Quinn not being a white hat (or even an entirely grey hat) while at the same time not making him absolutely unsympathetic since he was targeting a fan favorite.
I also needed to give Hawkeye back some agency in the story. I hit him hard and deep in the beginning, but I also knew if I didn't give him the opportunity to occasionally fight back and try to turn the tables, the story was going to turn into a drippy Woobie!Clint story.
So not what I wanted.
I think I also got in this scene the balance I was trying for between Clint the soldier, Clint the circus performer, and Clint who's probably been hanging out near Tony Stark a little too often lately. You see him analyzing his situation, taking in every bit of information he can and mapping out a strategy - but there's also that moment where he snarks back at Quinn...makes him lose just a little bit of control.
Definitely a fun one to map out - just wish I'd figured out how to work the extra scene I wrote in as an integral part of the story.
